The Stamford, Conn., facility of Schawk Inc. was poised to make the transition from an analog to computer-to-plate prepress workflow to accelerate the development of vibrant new packaging and speed client products to market. We asked Coleman Parkes Research to survey 400 senior decision-makers in finance, IT and other relevant business functions to find out what organisations like yours are doing, how well they’re managing, and whether they’re looking to make improvements. 

We found that fewer than one third of those surveyed have a single person or role responsible for managing and maintaining print services at enterprise level. The majority distribute responsibility for print services by country or region (25% of those we surveyed), by print environment (19%) or both (28%).

Fiery XF proServer and VUTEk Printers Deliver Blazing Speed and Top Quality for HPI and API

In business since 1976, originally as a photo processing shop, HPI of Houston is known for high quality, high-speed digital print work. President Steve  Hogan has been at the helm since 1987, and relies on cutting-edge  technology to exceed customer expectations and grow the business.

HPI operates two EFI™ VUTEk® GS3200 UV hybrid printers and a VUTEk  GS5000r UV roll-to-roll printer with the new EFI Fiery® XF proServer as  their production RIP solution. API runs a mirror copy of the same printers  and RIP in Austin. HPI’s typical jobs are in quantities of 100 or 200 prints  for applications like large full color signs, billboards, point-of- urchase  signs and displays, menu boards and cut-out displays. “We’ve been running VUTEk printers for over ten years,” says Hogan. “We’ve moved up in models from the original VUTEk PV200/600 to the QS2000,  then QS3200 to the GS3200’s we own now. We added the GS5000r for even greater speed. The quality of all our printers is exceptional. We  switched to the Fiery XF RIP recently, and then to the Fiery XF proServer  to take advantage of every bit of performance from our printers.”

Continues Steve: “Adding the Fiery XF proServer has cut our processing time for jobs in half over our old Fiery XF RIP system. And it’s eight to ten  times faster than the ColorBurst RIP we previously used. The net gain in  productivity is a 25 percent increase in throughput on each printer every day. I can’t fathom running the shop without the proServer!”

Introduction

The need for organizations and business enterprises to gain control of their burgeoning data volumes is now a strategice imperative. And it's not just the amount of stored data, increasing at an average CAGR of 50% that needs to be managed. Muliple data sources including databases, image repositories, mobile devies and the web are now being converged and leveraged as new sources of information for business value.

IT administrators have traditionally considered the tiering of data, data protection, and archiving as independent processes - narrowly focused and specific to a particular application or storage objective. The following are key recommendations for backing up data to an HP StoreOnce Backup system utilizing HP StoreOnce Catalyst software:

  • To improve backup storage utilization: backup one server at a time (sequentially) for quickly rising deduplication ratios that are maintained over time.
  • To reduce the end-to-end data size: if the backup process can accommodate it, use a unique StoreOnce Catalyst store for each data type or same type of operating system.
  • For the trade-off between backup impact and ease of recovery: configure a weekly full with daily incremental or initial full with daily incremental backup schedule to reduce the amount of end-to-end data and decrease the time required to run daily backups. StoreOnce Backup systems data deduplication will be utilized for full and incremental backups.
  • For efficient and cost effective movement of backup data offsite: use the StoreOnce Catalyst remote copy feature to seamlessly replicate all servers to an appliance in a remote facility for simpler recovery in the event of a disaster.
  • To increase backup speed without affecting deduplication ratios: use a larger Backup Exec backup block size for faster backup throughput performance with little or no effect on StoreOnce data deduplication ratios.
