Security and USB Ports on Lexmark Devices

CaptureAbstract

Virtually every personal computer sold today contains Universal Serial Bus, or USB, ports by which a wide array of devices can be attached. As with most technologies, the nature of USB support involves a measure of security exposure, since most anything that can be used can also be abused — theoretically if not practically.

Many Lexmark laser printers and multifunction printers (MFP) include support for USB devices, and it is appropriate to consider the potential security ramifications of that support. This white paper describes the security considerations related to USB ports on Lexmark devices, and explains the protections that have been put in place to address those security concerns.

Executive Overview

USB ports on personal computers provide a means to connect devices of various types and perform a variety of interactions. However, for security reasons the USB ports on Lexmark devices are far more limited in their capabilities.

The USB host ports on Lexmark’s devices provide the following:
• When a USB mass storage device (such as a thumb drive) is inserted, the printer finds and displays by name the image files and/or flash files that are stored on the device.
• The user can select jobs to print from the displayed jobs. If a flash file is selected, the printer firmware will be updated as long as firmware updates are allowed in the security settings.
• Additionally, a user can scan data directly to the USB thumbdrive if it is available in a supported scan format.

LEXMARK BUSINESS PRODUCTS Workarounds and Fixes for Windows XP SP2 WHITE PAPER

CaptureIntroduction
The Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 presents an impact to specific functions in a portion of LexmarkTM software. This white paper details the known fixes to enable adopters of this service pack to workaround issues uncovered in the field for supported PS&SD software.

With Windows XP Service Pack 2, the Windows Firewall (previously called the “Internet Configuration Firewall”) adds multiple security restrictions in the Windows registry, and is enabled by default. Many of the functions described in this White Paper deal with firewall issues, as the new Windows Firewall will prevent many of the Lexmark software components from communicating properly with network-connected devices.

Working Together with Our Clients to Protect the Planet: Lexmark Reduces Printing One Page at a Time

CaptureIntroduction
Protecting our planet is certainly a shared responsibility. As individuals, and as employees of corporations and government agencies, we are all concerned about the impact our daily lives have on the environment. At home, we recycle. We plant trees. We conserve water. But in the office, it seems to be more complicated and unclear. But is it? Does it have to be? What role do Information Technology (IT) departments play in supporting an organization’s overall sustainability practice? And with all of these questions considered, what is the probable pay-back on IT projects that are launched from an eco-friendly point of view?

As energy resources become more expensive over time, as economic challenges persist, and as other costs continue to increase, the pressure to rein in expenses across an organization takes on renewed urgency. At the same time, organizations are being expected to operate responsibly. These considerations weigh heavily on product and stock purchase decisions. While server virtualization and replacement of inefficient data center cooling systems projects are growing increasingly popular, these efforts require significant capital outlays, implementation of complex and expensive software, and modernization of aging refrigeration equipment.

There is a far easier path to achieving immediate sustainability recognition and financial savings with the huge added benefit of simultaneously raising productivity: simply printing less.

Reducing the need for printed output (including print, copy and fax) is good for the environment and it is good business. Lexmark has helped organizations around the globe reduce costs and give back to the environment by optimizing the effective use of output. A basic strategy starts by finding ways to simply print less. Slashing paper consumption means using less toner, fewer cartridges and less electricity. Reduced printing demand, in turn, leads to lower maintenance costs and a reduction in the number of output devices that need to be deployed.

> Security and Lexmark Multifunction Products: Overview of Features

CaptureExecutive Summary
Multifunction products, or MFP’s, are complex network devices that require careful security consideration. Lexmark MFP’s and networking products include a wide array of security features. This document discusses the security features of Lexmark MFP’s and provides an overview of their benefits and their implementation.

Any device that is placed on a network must be evaluated with respect to security. How does the device protect itself from unauthorized access? Does the device expose the network to any form of vulnerability? What sort of information does the device process and what are the security considerations related to that data? These, and many other questions, are appropriate to ask of any networked device, including networked MFP’s.

Networked MFP’s operate independently on networks and can be a focal point for sensitive information. Securing them is in some ways comparable to securing other conventional networked devices such as computers. The need or controlled network access and the need for secure remote management are largely the same for MFP’s and workstations. In other areas, the security considerations around MFP’s are substantially different. MFP’s generally don’t run conventional operating systems, the concept of user authentication is applied differently, they do not have network file shares that need to be secured and they probably do not need or support antivirus software.

This document will define the major areas of security concerns related to MFP’s and provide an overview of the security features of Lexmark MFP’s that allow the devices to be deployed, managed and used in a secure manner.
