Océ VarioPrint 135 Digital Press Receives Buyers Laboratory PRO Award

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 30, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, was recognized with a Buyers Laboratory LLC (BLI) PRO Award, which honors the Océ VarioPrint 135 digital press as Outstanding Monochrome Light-to Mid-Volume Production Device. New this year, BLI's PRO Awards are presented to production-level devices that prove to be the best-in-class as determined in BLI's tests. BLI's production print field evaluations entail three full days of intensive testing during which tens of thousands of pages are printed. Devices are tested for productivity with coated and uncoated media in a wide range of weights and sizes, simulating an array of real-world job scenarios. BLI technicians also evaluate image quality; ease of use; job management; and media-handling capabilities such as paper sizes, weights and capacities supported, as well as available inline finishing options.

"Of all the production devices we've tested since launching our production test program, the Océ VarioPrint 135 digital press earned higher ratings in more areas of performance than any other," said BLI Managing Editor Daria Hoffman. "For image quality, in particular, it sets a benchmark as the first to earn our rarely awarded five-star rating thanks to superior text, fine lines, halftones, solid coverage consistency and mixed-page-element handling."

Giclée Australia: Photgraphic Print and Art Reproduction Excellence with the Epson Sylus Pro 11880

When it comes to experience in digital art reproduction, there are few in Australia who can rival Warren Macris, Managing Director of Giclée Australia. As a photographer specialising in art reproduction since 1981, Warren has earned the reputation of being one of the most trusted printers for the photographic/art community. So much so that for well over 20 years he has been commissioned to reproduce the finalist entries in the Photography category of the prestigious Walkley Awards (previously the Nikon Awards) for Journalism.

As a professional – and professed perfectionist – striving constantly to push the boundaries of fine art printing excellence, in 2009 Warren introduced an Epson Stylus Pro 11880 64-inch large format printer into his digital workflow. The reason for this? Well, three primary ones, actually – quality, speed and reliability.

Fine-Tuned Transitions

Quality is of paramount importance to Warren; and this is particularly the case in regard to print colour accuracy and transitions. “Typically, people talk about colour gamut as being one of the major factors in print quality, but the reality is that most printers today have no problem at all in delivering on gamut,” he explains. “The real challenge is how the printer’s gamut is used in key areas such as transitions – and this is where the Epson Stylus Pro 11880 stands out.”

According to Warren, the printer’s ability to effect natural and smooth transition is plainly obvious in landscape photography prints in which the deep blues of the sky fade into blackness. “This is where most printer/ink combinations have problems,” he says. “With the Epson Stylus Pro 11880, though, the transitions are incredibly smooth and there’s no evidence of the excess magenta that you’ll typically find with other printers.

Print From Your Smart Phone

With the continuous advancement in print technology, phones and electronic capabilities in general, we are now able to do a lot more on the go. We used to only have internet at the office, now all we have to do is reach into our pockets to check email, or send reports. Printer drivers used to be a nightmare of options and settings. Now, drivers have standards and are generally pretty easy to install and use.

Overall, technology is becoming more advanced while becoming easier to use. This trend is also helping technologies merge to allow for new possibilities. One relatively new development is the ability to print from iPads and iPhones, and other smartphones soon to follow. The feature is called Air Print and is only supported on select printers and brands. While more and more models and brands are becoming compatible, there is an alternative method as well.

Interesting Advancements in Printing Technology

Since the dawn of the printer, there have been continual advancements in technology that continue to make our lives easier, faster and more reliable. These advancements have taken shape in both hardware, software and through other avenues like machine memory and security. Well some of the newest print technology is here.

Solidoodle has just introduced the world's first 3-d printer that costs under $500. While this may not apply to your office or replace your document printer by any means, it is still an interesting advancement that shows what we are capable of.

Is a Cheap Printer Worth It?

When you are in the market for a new printing device, there are many things to consider before making a purchase decision. There are many options out there for different types of printers with various quality, speeds and functions. It is important to know what you are signing you and your employees up for when purchasing office equipment.

Some of the main things that would-be purchasers typically consider first are cost, quality, function and speed. While these features are indeed important, there are a few other considerations that are often overlooked. Many times, if low cost is a high priority for the new equipment, the following elements can be ignored in order to secure that important low initial cost.

Enhancing the Benefits of Check 21

On a quiet day at the end of October in 2004, the United States government implemented one of the most sweeping changes to the banking system since the invention of revolving credit lines. The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, or “Check 21” as it has come to be known, revolutionized the way paper checks are handled. Checks can now be converted into a digital format resulting in faster processing, quicker funds availability, reduced fraud risk and lower costs.

One of the major benefits of Check 21 is that anyone can create electronic versions of checks and deposit funds to participating institutions over the Internet, which is known as Remote Deposit Capture (RDC). As a side effect of this change, credit unions are able to expand the geography they
serve since businesses and consumers can make electronic deposits without the need for an expansive network of branches. For Burlington, Massachusetts based EasCorp, a credit union that exclusively serves other credit unions, the benefits of Check 21 were immediately apparent and they set upon a path to provide their members with a powerful set of tools to be more competitive with larger banks and provide better service for
customers.

Benefitting from Electronic Check Workflows

For more than 30 years, EasCorp has been helping their member credit unions with a host of deposit, loan and investment services, ALM modeling and consulting, electronic payment and processing programs, share draft processing, and statement rendering. Once Check 21 was enacted, they developed and launched a branch capture program, Ease-Deposit. EasCorp immediately saw the incredible opportunity the technology could provide to consumers and businesses. Utilizing the same structure used to scan checks
at branch locations, EasCorp developed a web-based product named DeposZip®, which enables customers of member credit unions to make remote deposits by capturing images of physical checks.

“We released DeposZip in November 2007,” said Mr. Alan Bernstein, Senior Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning of EasCorp. “The software has been remarkably successful and has effectively processed more than one hundred fifty thousand deposits totaling over $177 million dollars since its launch. We now serve 39 credit unions with DeposZip.”
