Image Access Presents the World’s First Wide Format Duplex Scanner and the Technology Hit Bookeye 4
Image Access, specialty scanner manufacturer based in Wuppertal, Germany; will present their extended family of high performance wide format and planetary scanners at CeBIT 2010 in Hannover (Hall 3, Booth E20). Highlights at this year’s show will include the world’s first wide format duplex scanner, the WideTEK 36 DS as well as the innovative book scanner, Bookeye 4; developed particularly with the self-service application market in mind.
With the latest member of the Bookeye family, Image Access placed an emphasis on developing a scanner which is compact, easy to operate and competitively priced; to bring high end professional scanning to an even larger population of users. The efficient Bookeye 4 digitizes source material such as bound documents at high speeds in up to 600 dpi optical resolution and formats up to DIN A2.
Over 17 years of electronic, optical and mechanical engineering experience went into the creation and manufacture of the Bookeye 4. The clever mirror mechanism captures the document precisely from edge to edge, whether it is a flat document or a book open at an angle of 120 degrees.
The V-shaped book cradle was optimized to reduce the risk of damage to book spines and binding during digitization. The book cradle holds the open book at an angle of 120 degrees; enough to effectively scan the contents of a page, while gently preserving the original subject matter.

INTERQUEST Direct Mail Study: Inkjet Printers Generate Response Rates Comparable to Toner-Based Prnters
Danvers, MA – February 23, 2010 – RISO, Inc., a leader in digital printing technology, today announced the results of a recent INTERQUEST SURVEY that compared the response rates of post cards printed with electrophotographic (EP) and inkjet printing technology. The study was underwritten by RISO, but was conducted entirely by INTERQUEST, a leading market research firm centered on digital printing and publishing.
A total of 10,585 direct mail postcards were mailed to marketing executives in a variety of industries, including financial services, healthcare, banking, and manufacturing. Approximately half of the postcards were printed on a RISO full-color inkjet printer on non-gloss card stock and the other half were printed on a full-color toner-based (EP) production color printer on high-gloss card stock. The post cards offered recipients an Amazon.com gift certificate for responding to a brief online survey related to direct mail marketing.
When the responses were tabulated, INTERQUEST determined that the toner-produced postcards generated just 4% more responses (or 0.03% higher response rate) than the inkjet-produced postcards – a difference that is generally considered statistically insignificant. The study also showed that, while response rates for postcards printed by color inkjet and electrophotographic printers were nearly identical, the cost per lead generated from the inkjet-produced postcards was 62% lower than the leads generated from the EP-produced postcard.
“RISO was completely hands off in the execution and analysis of this study,” said Gilles Biscos, founder and president of INTERQUEST. “We selected the respondents, segmented the lists, contracted the printing and mailing, tabulated and analyzed the results. This was important for us in maintaining our credibility as a trusted source for the entire industry, and important to them in being able to cite an objective study. RISO is to be commended for the way they approached this study, which we hope helps advance a better understanding of direct marketing.”

IBM and Ricoh Deliver Intelligent Print Monitoring and Management System
Las Vegas, NV, February 22, 2010 — IBM (NYSE:IBM) and Ricoh today announced they have developed an advanced device and printing management system which infuses office devices with real-time tracking and monitoring to help firms significantly reduce their print-related costs, improve service and cut back on carbon footprints.
Through an Application Specific Licensing agreement with IBM, Ricoh will bundle the new system, which is based on IBM Tivoli software, with its multi-function products (MFPs) making the new systems available for enterprise clients.
While IT services have become more managed and optimized, most businesses still do not have enough insight into and control of their printing devices’ use and costs. These costs extend beyond the hardware and printers to include consumables, labor for repairs and system updates as well as the high cost of energy and resulting carbon footprint. Underscoring the need for better print-related cost controls is recent Gartner research data which indicates that organizations that manage their printer, copier and fax fleets can save between 10-30 percent of their print costs.
“This new, enterprise-class system will give our global customers complete visibility across their fleet of printers and MFP devices, helping them to better manage and optimize printing as an office function,” said Hede Nonaka, executive vice president, Marketing & Document Solutions and Services Division, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “The solution will also be a core technology for our Managed Document Services (MDS) offering.” Tivoli software can manage a range of assets beyond the datacenter including office equipment such as printers, office MFPs and production printing machines. Tivoli’s Intelligent Gateway manages policies to control end-user printing features and tracks energy usage and carbon footprint for print services, reporting at the device, department and individual level.

Toshiba Launches Enterprise Digital Rights Management Solutions
IRVINE, Calif., (February 16, 2010) – Toshiba America Business Solutions Inc. (TABS) today proudly announced the availability of Fasoo.com Digital Rights Management (DRM) solutions to its direct and independent dealers and their customers. Fasoo.com DRM solutions provide persistent document security through encryption technologies that limit document access to authorized users-only. Administrators can easily control access to Microsoft Office documents, PDFs, engineering drawings, images and other common file formats. They decide who can view, edit or print the documents and for how long. Administrators can even revoke access to a document after it’s distributed.
“Fasoo’s DRM applications will help Toshiba dealers and their customers provide even greater protection against unauthorized access to sensitive financial, technical and personal information,” said Bill Melo, vice president, Marketing and Enterprise Services and Solutions, TABS. “Threats to information come from both inside and outside of organizations, and this technology helps dealers and customers better address these risks.”
In the United States alone, companies lose more than $600 billion a year due to fraud and multifunction products (MFPs), by the sheer fact that they contain sensitive information, and are a critical point of vulnerability. The demand for safer information sharing is also increasing dramatically as more organizations adopt Enterprise Content Management (ECM) systems. Existing security measures within ECM applications provide insufficient document protection when files are opened and shared with external third parties. Lack of adequate document security exposes companies to significant risk and litigation if there is a breach of critical information. In addition to the innate desire to protect one’s information and business, demand is also increasing due to recently passed federal regulations that demand increased information technology security.

KODAK TRUPER Series Bring High Levels of Productivity and Image Quality to Low Volume Production Capture Space
Rochester, NY, February 16 -- Kodak continues to innovate in the low-volume production scanning space by helping users to achieve high levels of productivity and image quality for digitizing their paper records. The TRUPER Series Scanners are the first scanners to carry the Kodak name since the acquisition of the BÖWE BELL + HOWELL scanner division in 2009. New models include the KODAK TROOPER 3610 and the KODAK TRUPER 3210. Built on the same platform as the highly successful TRUPER 3200 and 3600 scanners, the new models offer increased throughput and feature enhancements. The 3610 model packs exceptional power into a compact, rotary-only scanner. The 3210 model features an automatic document feeder as well as a flatbed for scanning fragile or bound pages.
“The introduction of the enhanced KODAK TRUPER Series Scanners represents exciting new gains in the low-volume production scanning space,” said Tony Barbeau, General Manager, Document Imaging, Kodak’s Business Solutions and Services Group. “Mid-to-large sized organizations are often challenged with capturing a more diverse range of documents, to meet specific business needs. A large, specialized department like payroll might receive new paper-based information on a daily, or even an hourly basis, and requires fast, accurate digitization, to keep the overall business running efficiently. The TRUPER Series Scanners provide a valuable solution that expedites and streamlines these processes.”
The powerful speeds of the TRUPER Series Scanners, at 90 pages per minute (180 images per minute) in black-and white, color or grayscale and a daily duty cycle of 15,000 pages, make it ideal for increasing productivity in businesses across many industries such as healthcare, government, financial and insurance markets. For service bureaus, the TROOPER Series Scanners provide a reliable option for overflow projects and exception documents such as older, fragile papers or data from bound documents. Through a number of image processing enhancements found in these latest TRUPER Series Scanners, businesses can easily maintain greater integrity of data with the crisp, clean images that are captured, without compromising time.
